Gort 0-11
Kinvara 1-07
Gort got their Junior B Championship off to the best possible start with a 1 point win over neighbours Kinvara in Ardrahan last Saturday evening. Gort got off to a great start with a couple of fine points from play from centre forward Peter Howley. Liam Forde and Francis O'Connor extended the lead with some excellent scores and Gort went in at half time with a commanding 8 points to 1 lead.
Kinvara now had the aid of a strong breeze in the second half and came back into the game after a mix-up in the Gort defence between goalkeeper, John Connors, and corner back, John Stanford, led to a Kinvara goal. Indeed Kinvara went 1 point up with 10 minutes remaining and looked set to go on and secure victory. Gort fought back however and points from Ciaran Greaney and Francis O'Connor (2) secured the victory for Gort in an exciting finish.
The weather conditions were terrible considering it is now the month of June and played into the hands of the Gort defence who revelled in the physical encounters. Best for Gort on the day were Paul Connolly, Gordon Nolan, both Pat Loughnanes, Ciaran Greaney, Peter Howley & Francis O'Connor.
